Rory Will Not Be Throwing The Javelin For Ireland

Club over country every time ;) - Rory Dismisses Speculation On Ireland Olympic Javelin Bid. God bless you Rory. Well you have to laugh ;)

Wearing The Mother In Laws Knickers To The Match

No, not my mother-in-laws, but Ash's and no not me wearing Ash's mother-in-laws knickers either. For it all to become clear read the excellent blog by David Johnson, author of Tie Me To The Mast (on my Christmas present list). And no I won't be using Ash's experience as a template for my own lucky charms, despite picking the mother-in-law from Stoke station on Saturday ...

Manchester United Vs Stoke City

I can't say the scoreline (5-0 to Utd) surprised me but the manner of our defeat did. It was by far our worst performance of the season and that takes some doing after Bolton. Credit to Utd as their team took us apart but we didn't help our own cause with some terrible defending and Sorenson, Delap and Diao all having particularly poor games. Still if we were going to get a tonking, and let's face it its not likely to be the last this season, then Old Trafford was the place to get it as it came as little surprise and the match itself was just about bottom of the bonus points likelihood possibilities. The worrying thing is that our form away from home is truly appalling and we create so little its difficult to see us getting anything from away games other than a point in a 0-0 draw. A quick word about the referee, Peter Walton, who I thought had a good game. Sure, the home team did get the rub of the green but so do we at the Brit and I think all in all he got most of the decisions right and allowed the game to flow.

There was only one turnstyle for the away supporters into the South Stand, where I was, and this caused a long wait to get out at the end. The steps down to the seats were also the steepest I've encountered at a football stadium. The stadium was impressive from the outside and inside, although the size of the stands did make the pitch look small. The pitch also resides on a "hill" which was a bit weird but certainly, as we'd anticipated, nullified the few throws that Rory did have as he could get a decent run up.

Although I'm glad I went I have to be honest and say I can't see me going to Old Trafford again. The price of the tickets (£40-£50), the programme (£5) and long 3 mile walk from the town centre (bizarrely without seeing another football fan until I got within 1/2 mile of the ground) and the poor view from the stand will place it right at the bottom of the matches to visit next season (assuming we stay up). Still the atmosphere in amongst the Stokies was good and we were loud and proud, even if not apparently appreciated by the home support. Eye-rolling The acoustics must be even worse than the Brit as we could hardly hear the home support all match and I couldn't even figure out which was the Stretford End until I looked at a plan after the match. Likewise the Stokies in the SE said the SE was noisy and they couldn't hear the away support. By the end we were dancing along to "Burning Ring Of Fire" to every Utd goal and singing "We're gonna win 2-1, 3-2 ... 6-5 etc." and "1-0 And You Still Don't Sing ... 5-0 And You Still Don't Sing". Not much else we could do really with the lads taking a real pasting on the pitch. Pick of the chants was probably "You're just a fat Maradona" aimed at Tevez when he came off, although the irony of "Its just like watching Brazil" was largely lost on the Utd fans I think (We were playing in yellow shirts and blue shorts in case you're wondering). Thankfully no Munich songs could be heard but the abuse of Ronaldo went a little too far for my taste and whilst it certainly affected his play for 5-10 minutes, when he was clearly rattled, I think it only served to spur him on later in the game. Still in some ways he does bring the abuse on himself and he did resort to a few stunning dives to perfectly good tackles later in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if he's kept on the bench when Man Utd come to the Brit on Boxing Day.

Anyway onto two bigger and far more important matches in the next two weeks at home to West Brazil and Hull. And I have to be honest and say I'm looking forward to getting back to the cauldron of sound that is the Britannia.

Wigan Vs Stoke

I think the best thing that can be said about the match day was that I managed to park easily. The match day experience went downhill pretty much from there. The queue to the Red Robin (or whatever it was called) pub resembled the opposing penalty area when Rory was setting up a throw so I gave that a miss. The meat and potato pie at the ground was crap. The ground appeared half empty and the game was the worst load of tosh I have seen in a long time. It was the first time this season I left the ground immediately the full time whistle went. But a point is a point. We came for the point and we got it but it was barely what we deserved. From what I saw of Wigan I expect them to be fighting relegation this season, although to be fair I daresay after our performance the Wigan fans will think the same of us. When Steve Bruce said in the post match interview that he thought the match would be the last shown on MOTD I thought he was being optimistic that they'd have anything to show! Ho hum onwards and upwards. At least we can't play a worst match than that for the rest of the season ... can we?

My Manchester United Vs Stoke Ticket Has Arrived

My ticket for The Theatre Of Dreams (although I must admit I thought Man Utd's ground was called Old Trafford) arrived today and I'm in the south stand, upper tier. At a cost of £50 I better have a view of epic proportions!

Hopefully us Stokies, as the loudest supporters in the PL, will give the lads some great support and that they'll do us proud.

I expect we'll have a view renditions of
The Autoglass Trophy
We've won it two times

Not sure whether the Man Utd supporters have heard us Stokies singing Delilah before so if not they might be in for a bit of a shock Open-mouthed. Let's hope they don't choke on their prawn sandwiches Wink

Lee Dixon's tactical view - The Rory Delap Throw

And just when I said everyone was dissing the Rory Delap throw, ex-Stokie, Lee Dixon produces an excellent article, Lee Dixon's tactical view, explaining why the Rory Delap throw is such a potent weapon and tries to offer some advice on how it may be countered.

Rory Delap Bashing - Even Robbo Jumps On The Bandwaggon

I've lost count of the number of derogatory articles about Stoke being a one dimensional team completely reliant on Rory Delap's boring throws. Robbo is now jumping on the Rory Delap throw bashing bandwaggon with Defending The Delapidator. Please, keep them coming as we're loving them at Stoke. I can assure you that its refreshing to see a new weapon unleashed in the PL and certainly exciting to watch when you're not on the receiving end. Open-mouthed

We had the classic Hanson gaffe on MOTD (that I think Andy Gray might also have repeated on SSN), picked up by us Stokies but no one else apparently, when he said Chelsea were the only team to have handled Delap's throw ins. Alan, it was only because Rory was not playing in that match! I'm sure at some stage a team will figure out how to defend against it but we've seen nothing so far this season to worry us, especially at home, where our more attacking play and the narrowness of the pitch - that's right we specifically narrowed the pitch before the start of the season to make full use of the the throw - are allowing us to get more throwins and make better use of them.

Its been great to see even Manchester United fans discussing on their forums how they are going to counteract the throw. Excellent to know we're causing waves and worrying even teams from the big four.

Now let me check the size of the pitches at the JJB and Old Trafford ...
